Flash makes it easier for South Africans to collect their much-needed Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants close to home. Flash Group has joined forces with PostBank, and Tembo Investment Group, to enable qualifying recipients to access their SASSA Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants from any shop that uses a Flash device. Thanks to some smart technology, all Flash devices can facilitate cardless SRD cash withdrawals for free. Beneficiaries simply need to present their ID and approve the transaction on their mobile phone to access their grant.

What are SRD grants and what are the challenges of collecting them?

SRD grants are a form of financial assistance from the government available to South Africans who meet certain criteria. Although a welcome help, getting a R350 unemployment grant can be harder than it needs to be. Some of the challenges that recipients may face include long ques and minimal collection points, which means that people often have to travel out of their neighborhoods to get their grants.

Flash creates convenience and accessibility for SRD recipients, but also provides Flash merchants with benefits.

By offering the SASSA SRD grant collection service, Flash merchants can expect:

  • Increased foot traffic in-store
  • Flash balance top-up without the fees and without leaving the shop
  • Commission on SRD grants collected

Who can collect an SASSA SRD grant:

There is a criteria for who can collect SRD grants. SASSA SRD grants are available  to South African citizens or permanent residents between the ages of 18 and 60 years old who qualify. They also need to have been approved for the grant and need to have an account with Postbank. For more information on applying for grants, read here.

For the Flash merchant and the grant recipient, giving and receiving the grant is incredibly simple. It can be done in a few easy steps.

How to collect an SRD grant (for grant recipients):

To collect your grant, simply head to your nearest Flash store with your relevant documentation (SASSA registered ID number) and your cellphone (make sure it is the number you used when you registered for the grant). Once there, simply let the shop owner know you’re there to collect your grant and he/she will guide you through the rest of the process.
