What is RICA and why should you RICA your sim card?
The Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provisions of Communication-Related Information, or RICA for short, is the face-to-face authentication and validation of all customers when they purchase a new sim card – regardless of the network that sim card is linked to.
RICA allows personal information to be linked to a cell phone number and sim card serial number, which helps law enforcement track down people involved in illegal activity and crime conducted via cell phones. Making it vital in helping protect our communities and alleviate crime.
Now that we know what RICA is and understand its importance, let’s talk about what you need to RICA your MTN sim card.
What is Needed to RICA a MTN sim card in South Africa?
All countries has their procedures on how to RICA sim cards. Below is the list of steps on how to RICA a MTN sim cards in South Africa.
- Sim card serial number
- Full names and surname
- South African ID (Green book or card), Passport (local or foreign), or Refugee document (Important note: Foreign passports and Refugee documents should be valid)
- Proof of residence (Have any 1 of these on hand)
- Residential or employment address
- Bank statement (not older than 3 months)
- Rates and/or electricity account (not older than 3 months)
- Phone account (not older than 3 months)
- TV licence (current)
- Insurance policy (current)
- Lease agreement (current)
- New vehicle licence agreement
- If in informal settlement: Please provide address of nearest school or community centre/church/retail store/where you normally receive your post. An affidavit is also acceptable if the above is not available.
Where can I RICA my MTN sim card?
Visit your local Flash spaza shop with all the necessary documents to RICA your MTN sim card and the Flash Merchant will help you register in less than 15 minutes.
Ideally, have these documents on hand when you buy the sim card because networks and Flash merchants are not legally permitted to sell pre-RICA registered sim cards.
Have an old sim card that hasn’t been RICA’d? Bring it along to get it connected.
How to RICA MTN sim card
- Shop your sim card at your local Flash spaza (or bring your old one that hasn’t been RICA’d)
- Hand your Flash merchant all the required documents
- They will use the documents to register your sim card using their Flash device
Once your Flash merchant has registered your sim card, it will take no longer than 24-hours to be active on the MTN network.
To check if your MTN sim card has been registered, dial *135# or 083 123. If it doesn’t appear as registered, please repeat the above process.
